摘要

The characteristics of the slaughterhouseeffluents and current wastewater treatment practices in the province ofOntario, Canada are analyzed. Meat processing plants are found to produce largeamounts of wastewater due to the slaughtering process and cleaning of theirfacilities. Furthermore, the composition of the wastewater varies according tothe type and number of animals slaughtered and the water requirements of theprocess. However, the slaughterhouse wastewater usually contains high levels oforganics and nutrients. Several slaughterhouses in Ontario discharge theirwastewater into the municipal sewer system after primary pretreatment at themeat processing plant. Therefore, due to the high-strength characteristics ofthe slaughterhouse effluents, an extensive treatment for a safe discharge intothe environment is required. Thus, the combination of biological processes andadvanced oxidation technologies for slaughterhouse wastewater treatment isevaluated in this study. Results show that the application of combined biologicaland advanced oxidation processes is recommended for on-site slaughterhousewastewater treatment.
