The decrease in sea ice coverage impacts theaccessibility of marine areas especially in the Arctic.Areas further north than previously reported can beaccessed by marine mammals which are usuallyrestricted by the sea ice. We report sightings of severalhumpback whales north of 81o North. This is apreviously unknown habitat expansion. The recentdecrease in Arctic sea ice cover is likely to increaseaccessibility of marine areas for cetaceans, potentiallyresulting in northward expansions of species habitatranges.
