摘要

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of heavy sewage sludge application on concentration of mercury (Hg) in a calcareous soil (fine loamy, mixed thermic Typic Haplarigid) and corn (Zea mays). Sludge was applied at 25, 50 and 100 Mg ha-1 for five consecutive years. Sludge application significantly increased total Hg concentration in soil and in corn roots, stems and grains. At the end of the fifth year the average Hg concentrations in roots, stems, and grains were 91, 9, and 8 μg kg-1, respectively. Although, Hg uptake by corn did not exceed the US-EPA control levels of food and feed quality, using heavy sludge application may eventually lead to the build-up of metal concentrations which do no longer allow the production of safe food, despite the high potential of this calcareous soil to immobilize the metals.
