Sharing Choreographies in OpenKnowledge: A Novel Approach to Interoperability

As computer systems grow in size and complexity,their integration, while a necessity, becomes more difficult.Service oriented architectures and middleware systems in generaldeal with the issue by decoupling the components. However, thesearchitectures are still designed and enacted from a centralisedperspective: a single process invokes remote services, unaware ofbeing part of a larger, more complex workflow. We claim that theorchestration-based approach does not scale well with increasingcomplexity and heterogeneity of the components, such as thoserequired in the enactment of medical guidelines and workflows.Medical guidelines encode different aspects of a medicalprocedures, and they specify different level of abstraction inthe procedure. They have to be adapted to the realities ofdifferent clinics and hospitals, to advances in knowledge, andto the changing of available resources within an institution.We address the problem of representing and enacting medicalguidelines using a fully distributed approach. The frameworkprovided by OpenKnowledge, based on sharing choreographiesamong actors, allows the representation and enactment of thecoordination aspect of guidelines and the discovery of the medicalknowledge provided by the distributed actors.
