In 1947 Leslie Marchand, a professor from the English Department atRutgers University in New Brunswick, found out that James AlexanderSymington, a librarian from Leeds University in Yorkshire, England, hadamassed a large and fascinating collection of materials about English literature.He decided to mediate the purchase of that collection for his homeinstitution.
