RA R E L Y does a historian have an opportunity to study the lifeand career of a historical figure more than once. Generally, theinitial study encompasses all of the available evidence and spansthe entire career of a subject. This is not necessarily true in the case ofcontemporary history. Occasionally the historian of recent times isgranted a second opportunity to assess the subject of earlier work in thelight of new or recently discovered documentation. Through a fortuitousseries of events the papers of former Seaman Richard Stumpf of theImperial German Navy were recently made available to me. Thanksto the kind generosity of the Stumpf family they will now be placed inthe archives of the Rutgers University Libraries.
