摘要

A cross-sectional study of the epidemiological patterns of Brucella infection in horses of Borno State, north-eastern Nigeria was carried out. Blood samples were collected from 409 horses, comprised of 292 males and 117 females from the six Agricultural Zones of the State. The sera obtained were tested for Brucella antibodies by Rose Bengal Plate Test (RBPT) and competitive Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (cELISA). Of the 409 horses tested, 40 (9.8%) and 37 (9.0%) were seropositive by RBPT and cELISA respectively. A seroprevalence of 11.0% in male as against 4.3% in female horses was obtained; the highest seroprevalence of 19.2% was obtained from horses of age group 10 years and above and higher seroprevalence (5.7%) was obtained from pregnant mares than 3.7% from the non-pregnant ones. There was no statistical significant association (p>0.05) between the age group; pregnancy status and positive serological reaction. However, statistical significant association (p<0.05) was observed between the sex and positive serological reaction. The study concludes that Brucella infection is present in horses in all the Agricultural Zones of the State. The seroprevalence of Brucella infection in the studied animal is high (9.8%) and is therefore of public health concern since there is close association between humans, ruminants and equines in the study area.
