摘要

Vestimentiferan tubeworms are hosts to intracellular, environmentally acquired, chemolithotrophic gammaproteobacterial symbionts. Phylogenetic analyses based on a few molecular markers seemed to indicate that nearly all of the Eastern Pacific host species were associated with the same symbiont phylotype, Candidatus Endoriftia persephone. Using genome-wide comparisons of Candidatus Endoriftia persephone in association with three worm species, Perez and Juniper (p. 51975205) showed that Northeast Pacific and East Pacific Rise symbiont populations separated by mid-ocean ridge discontinuities were vicariant and that other factors (e.g., local environmental conditions, host specificity) may also shape the genetic makeup of these populations.Novel antimicrobials are critically needed to deal with the current global problems associated with antibiotic resistance in human and animal infections. Using a screening strategy for broad-spectrum antimicrobials combined with genome mining, Ovchinnikov et al. (p. 52165224) discovered a new group of antimicrobial peptides (bacteriocins) that show very potent activity against many important Gram-positive pathogens and their antibiotic-resistant derivatives. These bacteriocins differ from other known bacteriocins in terms of chemical composition and mechanism of action, thus representing great potential in diverse antimicrobial applications. The study also provides a useful strategy to search for novel antimicrobials.
