Towards a Framework for Integration of Requirements Engineering in PLM

Requirements Engineering is often seen as the process starting with the expression of requirements from stakeholders that aims to provide a coherent set of specifications, thus a starting point in the life cycle of a product. In a PLM context, managing the products data in order to prepare for the end of life is easily mistaken for a set of tools and techniques to manage the documentation, or keeping up-to-date with the Bill Of Material of the products. However, in some cases such as with long or iterative design phases, and for products with a long lifespan, the requirements engineering phase can span over the whole Beginning Of Life, and in some cases requirements could be expected to evolve while the product considered is in operation, quickly unravelling the complex issue that PLM can be. This paper aims to propose a framework for facilitating modelling requirements, with the goals of allowing their evolutions during the life cycle of the product they apply on, and especially allowing further advances such as computational processing of the requirements for validation and control of the products given the requirement set.
