To the Editor: In the large studyby Evans and Wegener recently pub-lished in Emerging InfectiousDiseases (1), salmonellae in broilerchickens and pigs significantlydecreased after routine in-feed antimi-crobial drug use for growth promotionwas terminated in Denmark.Avoparcin was a frequently usedgrowth promoter in poultry until itsban in Denmark in 1995 because of itsassociation with the development andspread of vancomycin-resistant ente-rococci. On examining Evans andWegener's data, I noticed that a pre-cipitous drop in salmonellae in broilerchickens appeared to have occurred inearly 1996. Do the authors think thisdrop was due to the withdrawal ofavoparcin. As the authors note,avoparcin has been associated withincreased shedding of salmonellae(including a dose-response effect) in anumber of studies (2,3). If the largedrop (from approximately 25% posi-tive samples in 1995 to approximately10% in 1996) is not due to withdraw-al of avoparcin, what do the authorssuggest could have caused it
