Three days after issuing aglobal alert (1) about casesof atypical pneumonia in sever-al countries in southeast Asia,the World Health Organization(WHO) introduced the termSARS to the world's lexicon(2). Familiarity with the newlycoined acronym for "severeacute respiratory syndrome"was immediate, fueled by fearand by virtually continuous coverage by the media.1Thisintense reaction and scrutiny would generate multifacetedoutcomes, enabling widespread collaboration and commu-nication to help curb the tragic health consequences whilewreaking economic, social, and even political havoc inmany areas
