To the Editor: Molecular typingof Mycobacterium tuberculosis strainsisolated in several countries in recentyears has shown that a group ofstrains known as "Beijing" iswidespread around the world (1). TheBeijing group of M. tuberculosis hasbeen associated with drug resistance;one multidrug-resistant strain,designated "W," was found in NewYork City in the early 1990s andcaused large institutional outbreaks oftuberculosis (TB) in the United States(2). M. tuberculosis strains ofBeijing/W genotype are mostlyprevalent in Asia (1), but recent datasuggest that they have been spreadingin Indochina and are prevalent amongyounger persons in Vietnam (3).Beijing/W strains are also widespreadin Eastern Europe (1); during the lastdecade, the Beijing/W genotype of M.tuberculosis, with more prevalentdrug-resistant mutations than non-Beijing strains, has been identified in40% to 50% of clinical isolatesstudied in Russia (4).
