(HBoV) is a recently discovered virusof the family Parvoviridae, genusBocavirus, which appears to causewidespread respiratory tract infec-tions (RTI) in children. In selectedgroups of children with RTI, detectionrates have varied from 2.8% to 11.3%(1–9). However, the exact prevalenceand pathogenic effects of this virusremain to be established.During a prospective cohortstudy to evaluate the prognosis offever at a general practice after-hoursservice in Rotterdam, nasopharyngealswabs were collected from febrilechildren and tested for respiratoryviruses, including HBoV. We reportthe incidence and clinical features ofHBoV infection in these children.From June 1, 2005, throughJanuary 16, 2006, all children 3months to 6 years of age whose par-ents contacted the after-hours servicebecause of fever, as reported by par-ents and not further defined, were eli-gible for inclusion in the study.Children were excluded when the par-ents could not communicate in Dutch(n = 77) and if the child had alreadybeen included within the past 2 weeks(n = 11). A research nurse visited thechild at home within 24 hours ofinclusion. The child was physicallyexamined, and a nasopharyngeal swaband a blood sample for C-reactiveprotein measurement were collected.The parents subsequently recordedthe child's symptoms in a diary for 7days.
