A 4-month survey of 607 stools taken from 341 infants with diarrhea under 1 year in the Denver area resulted in the isolation of only 20 Proteus strains and 1 Providencia organism. Fifty colitypes of suspect pathogenicity along with 9 Shigella and 8 Salmonella were the principal diarrheal incitants recovered. The small number of Proteus and Providencia recoveries suggest that these organisms are not frequent diarrheal incitants for the pediatric population in the Denver community.
