Since the principle of life in animals is a force which is ever active, which is constantly endeavoring to overcome obstacles, and since nature when left to its own devices cures many diseases by itself, it follows that when a remedy is applied, it is infinitely difficult to determine what effects are due to nature and what to the remedy. The result presents itself to the wise man merely as a greater or lesser probability, and that probability can be converted into certainty only by a large number of facts of the same king.
