Aflatoxin in corn, alar in apples, bovine growth hormone in milk, cyanide in grapes, faulty wiring in jet aircraft: What Science magazine has labeled "the scare of the week" is taking a psychological toll. But safety is hardly ever free. To produce more of it, the output of some other valued good or service must be reduced. To make sensible choices between greater safety and the alternatives, scientists argue, Americans need more and better information presented in ways that stimulate a sense of perspective.
