Thegonadaswellasthereproductivetracts,kidney,andadrenalcortexarederivedfromtheintermediatemesoderm.Inaddition,theintermediatemesodermformsthemesonephros.Althoughthemesonephrosisthesourceofcertaintesticularcelltypes,itscontributiontogonadformationthroughexpressionofgrowthfactorsislargelyunknown.Here,weexaminedtheexpressionprofilesofemFGF9/eminthedevelopingmesonephrosofchickembryosatsexuallyindifferentstages,andfoundthattheexpressiondomainisadjacenttothegonadalprimordium.Moreover,emFGFR3/em(emFGFreceptor3/em)showedastrongexpressioninthegonadalprimordium.Next,weexaminedthefunctionsofFGFsignalduringgonadaldevelopmentwithmisexpressedemFGF9/em.Interestingly,misexpressionofemFGF9/emledtogonadalexpansionthroughstimulationofcellproliferation.Incontrast,treatmentwithachemicalinhibitorforFGFRdecreasedcellproliferationandresultedinreductionofthegonadalsize.Simultaneously,thetreatmentresultedinreductionofgonadalmarkergeneexpression.OurstudydemonstratedthatemFGF/emexpressedinthedevelopingmesonephrosisinvolvedinthedevelopmentofthegonadatthesexuallyindifferentstagesthroughstimulationofgonadalcellproliferationandgonadalmarkergeneexpression./p/div
