Alcohol is an established risk factor for atrial fibrillation(AF).1 Moderate, habitual consumptionincreases the incidence of AF in a dose-dependentmanner.2 Holiday heart syndrome, characterized by paroxysmalAF following excessive alcohol intake, occurs inregular drinkers, but also in infrequent and nondrinkersafter a binge.2 Many of such patients develop AF at thetime of intoxication, but others present 12–36h later.2Although human and animal studies have reported thatalcohol acutely causes shortening of the atrial refractoryperiod and slow conduction that favor reentry,2 the mechanismsand underlying molecular bases of binge drinkinginducedAF, particularly in the subacute phase, are largelyunknown.
