Rubella occurs worldwideand being a mild self-limiting disease; it is oflittleconcern as such. However,consequencesare dreadfulifwomenbecomeinfected during theearlymonths oftheir pregnancy. Rubella virus is highly teratogenicand may lead to abortion or intrauterinefetal death.Thesurviving fetuses may develop congenitalrubellasyndrome(CRS) which includes mentalretardation, deafness,cataract,congenital heartdefects, microcephaly,and hepatitis. According to the World HealthOrganization,every year 100,000 children are bornwithCRS globally.[1]CRS ratesare highest in the African and South-East Asian regions where vaccinecoverageis lowest. According to astatisticalmodel-basedestimate, 46,621 infants withCRS are born annually in SouthEast AsianRegion alone.[2] Susceptible health personnelcaring for thesechildrensuch as doctorsand nursescan becomeinfected and may pass it on to other susceptible patientsespecially pregnant women and can also lead tohospital-borne outbreaks ofrubella.
