Looking back atmy own journey, I did remember fewincidences. I was brought up in afamilywhereI had completefreedomto make my own choices. I neverexperienced gender bias tillI becamean intern and entered medicalward. I proudly entered medicalward asa DOCTOR, just to beaddressed as SISTERbypatient's relatives! I used to get irritated, not because nursing isan inferior profession. However, BECAUSE patients perceived allmalesas DOCTORS and allfemalesas SISTERS! It is difficult for our society to accept females in leadership roles. When Ientered private practiceasa MedicalOncologist two decades back, Iinteracted withmany specialist health professionals. In general, male doctors feelthat female doctorsare notseriousabout their profession. They feelthey are notbreadwinnersand aretoo busywith household responsibilitiesand socialcommitments. One ofthe malecolleagues told meclearly that he does not refer his patients tofemale doctorsas hefinds theminefficient! I suggested to some ofthemthat they should startsharing responsibilities with their wives,and things willchangefor better.Obviously, this was notappreciated much.
