InDecember 2019, theIndianCouncil ofMedicalResearch (ICMR) has released a draft document to guide physicians on decisions not to providecardiopulmonaryresuscitation (CPR) to patients. The draft document narrates that the death is inevitablein certain situationsat theterminalstage ofcertain diseasesand providingCPRmay only increasethesuffering ofsuch patients. The draft document recommends that physicians should providecompleteinformation to patients or their familymembersaboutcircumstances under whichCPRwould in the best judgment of physicians beconsidered medically inappropriate. Itemphasizes the need to explainsuch circumstances to patientsand familymembers, so they understand theimplications ofCPRin thecontext oftheincurability ofthe diseaseand the nearlyimpossible opportunity foranymeaningfulsurvival.
