A regional consultative meeting on primary health care(PHC) for universal health coverage (UHC) took place on30 July–1 August 2019 in Cairo, Egypt (1). The meeting sawthe formal launch of the Primary Health Care Measurementand Improvement (PHCMI) initiative (2), whichfollows from the launch of the Primary Health Care PerformanceInitiative (PHCPI) announced by Dr AhmedAl-Mandhari, WHO Regional Director for the EasternMediterranean Region, at the celebration of World HealthDay on 5 April 2019, in Cairo, Egypt (3). The initiative aimsto support countries to fulfil the commitments made inthe Astana Declaration on PHC (4).
