Campania region, Southern Italy, is a wide andcritical area affected by environmental problems andcharacterized by different levels and sources of air pollution.The main tasks of the paper are: first, the compilation of theemission inventory of this Region, and second, the evaluation ofair quality and the individuation of agglomerates and zonescharacterized by similar air quality levels. For the first task, theatmospheric emission inventory was performed by using abottom-up approach, focusing at regional level instead ofnational; the pollutants produced from different sources wereachieved through direct measures for the most importantindustries, while for diffused sources the emissions wereestimated. Emissions from road transport sector, that are themost difficult to calculate depending on many variables, wereestimated with a technique that implements the COPERTmethodology. For the second task, in order to calculate thepolluting concentrations and to assess the air quality state allover the Region, the analysis was carried out by using theGaussian model ISC. The environmental zoning has assembledall communes in macro areas, revealing four reclamation zonesand one observation zones, for which reorganization strategieswill be necessary to the aim to catch up the established limits.This modelling approach can be considered as an importantassessment tool for the local environmental authorities, becauseit can be applied in order to evaluate the compliance of airquality with the limit values and the influence of variousemission categories on air quality.
