摘要

rowing up, I remember being the onlyone, or one of only a few kids of colorthroughout my classes. I recall feelinga mixed sense of relief, belonging, and sharedexperiences as I entered college and saw myblack classmates who had similar stories andwho were likewise encouraged to see otherblack faces looking back at them. When I en-tered medical school, the academic leadershipproudly exalted the fact that our class had thelargest number of black/African-American ma-triculants the school had ever seen, at 19 outof a class of 200 (16 women and three men—not a typo). As I have progressed through mycareer as a physician, academician, and leader,it saddens me to look around the room almosta half century into my life and still be the onlyone, or one of only a few. I know many of mycolleagues of color may relate.
