—General password policies do not guarantee thatpasswords fulfilling the requirement are good enough. Thepolicies have a tendency to be too broad to be useful forall users. Different users have different designing processesbased on what kind of passwords they most easily remember.Users are also often left to generate passwords on their ownwithout any training. In our study we used new passwordcreation guidelines when teaching students password security.We divided passwords into three password categories:Word password, Mixture password and Non-word password.For each category different password generation guidelineswere taught to students. Students had access to the passwordquality measurement tool, which not only measured thestrength of the password but also guided students in thegeneration process. Our goal is to measure the effect ofeducation on the strength of a password and analyze recallrates of the passwords created by the new guidelines. It isshown that education had a positive effect and that passwordsbecame stronger right after the education. The mostimportant result is that a password structure got changed asthe variation of structures increased and different structuretypes were more evenly distributed. However, after halfa year without reminders or education repetition, mostof the positive effect was lost. While password structuresstill differed, they had become less complex as participantshad given up using special characters. Recall rates of thepasswords generated with new guidelines are good.
