Computation of the Normalized Detection Threshold for the FFT Filter Bank-Based Summation CFAR Detector

—The FFT lter bank-based summation CFARdetector is widely used for the detection of narrowbandsignals embedded in wideband noise. The simulation andimplementation of this detector involves some problems concerningthe reliable computation of the normalized detectionthreshold for a given probability of false alarm. This paperpresents a comprehensive theoretical treatment of majoraspects of the numerical computation of the normalizeddetection threshold for an AWGN channel model. Equationsare derived for the probability of false alarm, Pfa, forboth non-overlapped and overlapped input data and thenused to compute theoretical upper and lower bounds forthe detection threshold T. A very useful transformation isintroduced that guarantees the global quadratic convergenceof the Newton-Ralphson algorithm in the computation of Tfor overlapped data with an overlap ratio not exceeding50%. It is shown that if the product of the number of FFTbins assigned to a channel for signal power estimation andthe number of input data blocks is relatively small, e.g.,less than 60, the theoretical normalized detection thresholdcan be accurately computed without numerical problems.To handle other cases, good approximations are derived.
