Reducing Energy Consumption of Wireless Sensor Networks through Processor Optimizations

—When the environmental conditions arestable, a typical Wireless Sensor Network (WSN)application may sense and process very similar orconstant data values for long durations. This is acommon behavior of WSN nodes that can be exploitedfor reducing their power consumption. This studycombines two orthogonal techniques to reduce theenergy dissipation of the processor component of thesensor nodes. First, we briefly discuss silent-storefiltering MoteCache. Second, we utilize Content-Aware Data MAnagement (CADMA) on top of Mote-Cache architecture to achieve further energy savingsand possible performance improvements. The complexityincrease introduced by CADMA is also compensatedby further complexity reduction in Mote-Cache architecture. Our optimal configuration reducesthe total node energy, and hence increases the nodelifetime, by 19.4% on the average across a wide varietyof simulated sensor benchmarks. Our complexityawareconfiguration with a minimum MoteCache sizewith only four entries not only achieves energy savingsup to 16.2% but also performance improvementsup to 14%, on the average.
