Background and Objective: Humic acid is a natural organic matter occurred in water and soil and resulted from biodegradation of the residue of plants and animals. The study of the characteristics of humic acid s is important in water treatment due to their effect on the fate of pollutants and the formation of disinfectant byproducts. The aim of this study is to characterize the humic acid (HA) extracted from the soil of Banha governorate, Egypt. Materials and Methods: Elemental analysis, UV spectra, FTIR spectroscopy and sup1/supH-NMR were used to characterize the extracted HA. Results: The UV spectra of extracted humic acid showed close values of specific spectral absorbencies Esub4/sub/Esub6/sub indicating that a complete degree of humification was attained. Conclusion: The FTIR and sup1/supH-NMR results confirmed that, the extracted humic acid has a relatively large aliphatic fraction, aromatic fraction and function groups characterizing humic substances in comparison with Aldrich humic acid (AHA).
