Effect of B2O3 substitution for SiO2 in alkali aluminoborosilicate glasses on chemical strengthening

This study reports the strengthening effect of partially substituting SiOsub2/sub with Bsub2/subOsub3/sub in aluminoborosilicate (ALBS) glasses. Specifically, it investigates how the Bsub2/subOsub3/sub addition affects the ion-exchange behavior of the glass. The base composition of ALBS glass is 13Nasub2/subO–5Ksub2/subO–7MgO–15Alsub2/subOsub3/sub–12Bsub2/subOsub3/sub–48SiOsub2/sub (mol %). In the prepared samples, the proportion of Bsub2/subOsub3/sub was varied from 0 to 16 mol %. The Nasup+/sup/Ksup+/sup inter-diffusion coefficient of each sample was estimated from the Ksup+/sup ion concentration profile collected along the cross-section of each sample after immersion in molten KNOsub3/sub at ( T g × 0.83) K (where T g is the glass transition temperature) for 8 h. Adding only a small amount of Bsub2/subOsub3/sub drastically changed the Ksup+/sup ion concentration profile. In contrast, the activation energy of the Nasup+/sup/Ksup+/sup inter-diffusion was almost independent of Bsub2/subOsub3/sub content. These results suggest that the Bsub2/subOsub3/sub incorporated in the glasses simply acts as a flux component. These findings are useful for designing compositions that strengthen ion-exchanged glasses.
