Acinetobacter baumannii is a leading cause of complicatedinfections in the hospital environment, particularly amongseverely ill patients [1]. The crude mortality attributed toAcinetobacter species causing bloodstream infections ishigher than 50% [2]. Carbapenems have been one of themain antimicrobial classes used against A. baumannii infec-tions [3], but the emergence and dissemination of carbape-nemases have diminished the utility of this class of drugsfrom an already limited list of existing treatment options[4]. In Brazil, it is known that carbapenem-resistant A. bau-mannii is considered endemic [5], and the main lineagescirculating in that country are those belonging to the clonalcomplexes (CCs) CC1, CC15 and CC79 [6, 7]. Among thealternatives for the treatment of infections due to carbape-nem-resistant A. baumannii, polymyxins and other non-b-lactam agents, such as tetracyclines, may be valuable options[3]. Given the increasing rates of multidrug- (MDR) andextensively drug-resistant (XDR) A. baumannii [8], deter-mination of the antimicrobial susceptibility of alternativeagents is needed to assess the availability of potential thera-peutic options. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess thein vitro activity of antimicrobial agents against carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii isolates recovered from clinicalspecimens of patients from several hospitals in the state ofS~ ao Paulo, Brazil.
