This paper describes a possible application of phasor measurement units (PMUs) for the out-of-step (OOS) protection. The biggest advantage of PMUs over traditional relays is the fact that they provide synchronized measurements, which in turn allow for direct phase angle comparison between different locations. For this reason, to truly utilize the potential of these devices, it is necessary to employ at least two of them (at different locations). Such an approach has been taken here.
