Polyaniline (PANI) nanofibers have been prepared by potentiodynamic electrodeposition on nickel fromaniline in sulfuric acid solution. By varying the scan rate during deposition, polyaniline nanofibers withdifferent diameter and length have been obtained, as shown by scanning electron microscopy. The layerof polyaniline nanofibers deposited on nickel has an open and porous structure at low scan rates and amore compact structure at high scan rates. The modified Ni/PANI electrodes were used for the hydrogenevolution reaction and their electrocatalytic activity was evaluated by linear Tafel polarization andelectrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. It has been shown that the presenceof polyaniline nanofibers layer increases the electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction ascompared to plain nickel electrode, as indicated by the increase of the apparent exchange current densityby two orders of magnitude and the decrease of overpotential for hydrogen evolution reaction.
