The authors present a Grand Rounds on a potentially disastrous, but fortunately rare, complication of lumbar disc arthroplasty [1]. The world wide incidence from the literature is not clear. At our Institute, in a recent review of 1700 lumbar disc arthroplasties we had only one documented infection [2]. This had not progressed to the point of cutaneous fstulas and was treated much like these authors proposed with a staged anterior and posterior revision.
