Once again, we are writing about 'steam day events', this time in the early 1960s, which happened in an area that was then undergoing profound changes in the rail transport network; and that was long before even the Channel Tunnel and the introduction of 'Javelin electric-multiple-units. As I wrote 60 years ago - no, sorry, two years ago - the Thanet area of Kent, and then bounded by the railway from Canterbury to Deal, Dover and round via Ashford, still sees the occasional steam train organized by a commercial company. This is a far cry from the days when most of such tours were organized by railway societies, such as the Locomotive Club of Great Britain (LCGB), Stephenson Locomotive Society (SLS), and Railway Correspondence & Travel Society (RCTS) - to those who organised those tours, with so much forethought as to 'what was going on', our thanks. My earlier article 'Steam in Kent - Sixty years ago' (Steam Days, July 2019), also tried to stress how much those elderly pre-grouping locomotives of classes 'D1', 'E1' and 'L1' - and even class 'L' - were so much 'to the fore' in the everyday matter of running trains, and the trains themselves were somewhat different to the modern-day (2021) electric-multiple-units.The reader is warned: 1961 saw the completion of the second phase of the Kent electrification, albeit not until June 1962 were timings accelerated, but there could never be quite the same 'magic' about some of the 'moments' in 1961 as there were in 1959 -Phase One was completed on 15 June 1959 with the full electric service from London to Ramsgate and to Dover via Chatham, and on the Sheerness-on-Sea branch. So, we may take a few steps back from time to time - and what better place to start than Sunday, 21 September 1958? If you can look back again at Steam Days for July 2019, page 53, there is a paragraph 'Happy Memories' - that describes an evening at Paddock Wood watching the operation of hop-pickers trains.Even in 1958 those trains were poorly patronised .. . recalling that Paddock Wood, as well as fast lines and platform loops, also had eastward-facing bay platforms for Maidstone (West) and Hawkhurst, on the down and up side respectively. Table One sets out the operating detail of that evening.
