The Air Force is working with Northrop Grumman to determine whether technology developed as part of the canceled B-2 Defensive Management System Modernization program can be used for other Air Force applications. "The types of things B-2 DMS was looking at, which was how to penetrate when it's a difficult environment… that's a generic problem for the Air Force," service acquisition executive Will Roper told reporters Tuesday following a House Armed Services tactical air and land forces subcommittee hearing. "One of the things I'm working with Northrop on currently as we de-scope the program is how to roll their development into other areas." Roper wouldn't discuss specific programs the work could benefit, saying those efforts are classified, but added: "There are lots of places we could go because the code and their development environment is good." The Air Force's fiscal year 2021 budget request essentially gutted the $3 billion B-2 DMS-M program after continued software development problems delayed its initial operational capability target date by two years. The request zeroes out funding for the effort and shifts nearly $155 million to a new, much less expansive, B-2 DMS-M display upgrade line.
