Threatened abortion (TA), defined as vaginal bleedingwith or without lowerabdominal pain or backache with aclosed cervix and an intrauterine viablefetus, is thecommonestcomplication that occurs in early pregnancy,especially in 8 to 12 gestationalweeks when thesecretion ofestrogen and progesteroneshifts fromcorpus luteumto placental. It is thecommonestcomplication in pregnancy, occurring in aboutafifth ofcases. And womenwith threatened abortion are 2.5 times morelikely to miscarry than healthywomen. [1,2] As many as 50%ofthe miscarried fetusesand embryos have normalchromosomes. [3] Therecognized risk factors ofTAareadvanced age(maternalage over 35 years old), previous miscarriages, obesity,and cigarettesmoking. [2,4,5] In addition, uterine malformations,cervicalincompetence, polycystic ovaries, poorly controlled diabetes mellitus, maternalinfections, luteal phase defect, immune dysfunctions such asantiphospholipid syndrome,and exposureto environmental toxinsalso haveassociationwithTA. [6–8] In clinical practice, targeted and directed treatmentshould be used to treat TAand preventmiscarriage when specificcausesareidentified,common drugs include uterine muscular relaxants, [7]anti-Dimmunoglobulin, [9] progesterone, [10] β-HCG, [11] magnesiumsulfate, phloroglucinol, [12]etc. However, inmany cases, thecause ofTAcannot beidentified, [13] treatment ofTAis mostly empirical. Bed rest is routinely recommended, but thereis insufficientevidence of high quality thatsupports it in order to preventmiscarriage.
