The Army finished delivery Sept. 28 of the ground equipment for the Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon to the battalion at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA, that is training to field the first battery of American hypersonic missiles, the service announced Oct. 7. The delivery beat the Sept. 30 deadline to provide the ground equipment for the missile, which the service plans to field in fiscal year 2023, according to Col. Ian Humphrey, project manager for integration in the Army's hypersonic project office. "I like to highlight that we were two days early," Humphrey said on a call with reporters this afternoon. Delivery of the hardware began in March. The ground equipment includes a battery operations center, trucks, trailers and four mobile launchers, according to a press release from the Army. The battery now has all the equipment it would need to field the missiles except the missiles, and it will conduct training over the next two years. Lockheed Martin won the contract to supply the ground equipment in August 2019, Humphrey said. "Today celebrates a milestone and is a huge win," Bob Strider, deputy director of the hypersonic project office, told reporters on the call. The ground equipment and the exercises the battery will complete over the next few years will serve as a foundation the Army "can leverage as a potential baseline for a program of record," he said.
