With accelerated developments in technology, the future of work is poised for change. Many people are curious to learn how artificial intelligence (Al) will disrupt their jobs and work processes. Some experts believe Al will create new lines of business and jobs and will assist employees to do their job more efficiently and effectively. Many existing jobs such as paralegals, journalists, office workers, and computer programmers are under threat because of the growth of Al and organizations have started to realize the need to re-skill and train their existing workforce. Training and development functions are also witnessing a significant transformation due to recent applications of Al. Al is the simulation of human intelligence processes like learning, reasoning, and self-correction by machines, including computer systems. Typical applications of Al include expert systems and speech recognition. Al aids assessment of training needs, the design of personalized content and delivery of training when and where convenient for trainees. In other words, Al helps learners by adding context, specificity, relevance, and personalization to training processes and methods. Al can make learning specific, interesting, engaging, experiential, and measurable. Al can solve many of the significant challenges often faced by trainers, such as the delivery of customized solutions and measurement of effectiveness of training programs. This paper discusses the rationale, theoretical foundation, application, and future of Al-based training through a review of relevant research papers, articles, and case studies.
