Clearly my title begs the question as to what is good OD and bad talent management. And it needs clarifying why I am concerned about it. I'll take a case study that must be known to all readers - the banking crisis of 2008 and use that to illustrate a few points. What was happening in the banks - and specifically the departments that were doing crazy things with derivatives and the like - was the hiring of supposedly talented people to develop instruments of some complexity. Indeed they were so complex that most other bank employees could not understand them, including most of the senior leadership of the banks. It was a great example of talent management gone wrong.
