The article distinguishes between the various propulsion systems and introduces the limits of the 'ram jet' unit. Internal combustion engines have the cycle SUCK, SQUEEZE, BANG, BLOW (all the girls in the audience giggle). Conventional "gas" turbines use a large diameter compressor fan stage feeding air to the combustion chamber(s). The expanded hot gases (products of combustion) drive a multistage turbine on the same shaft as the compressor fan. The turbo-prop aeroplane engine uses this shaft, through reduction gearing, to drive the external screw propeller. Contra-rotation propellers are also used to improve aerodynamic efficiency. Propellers have limited efficiency; the tips can easily exceed the speed of sound and suffer from cavitation and resonance effects in the same way as marine propellers. These can be catastrophic.
