Amid the hype surrounding mp3 players and satellite radio, the technological transformation in terrestrial radio has been lost among consumers. Broadcasters are moving quickly to change that as they adopt digital technology and begin to promote the digitally-updated industry. Currently, 317 stations in more than 100 markets are broadcasting digitally, expected to grow to 600 stations by year-end and 2,500 over the next two years. At an average cost of approximately $8oK per station, the industry is expected to invest more than $200 mil. in the technology, allowing digital signals to be simulcast along with analog ones.
