When the DTV transition first began, there was a flurry of players trying to launch services that would create new markets or enhance current data distribution for existing services via the 19.39 Mbps DTV spectrum. There were two schools of thought: One was to exploit the bandwidth more fully by pushing data through the DTV spectrum during off-peak hours when broadcasters weren't using much of the spectrum. This obviously wouldn't work for some services―providing high-volume real-time stock quotes, for example. It could work for something like pushing content to PCs in the middle of the night, however, if a user's preference for a particular type of content were known. The other emerging business model involves using a fixed percentage of the spectrum full-time to provide real-time data services.
