When you think of it, a loudspeaker is a pretty amazing device. With paper cones or aluminum domes and some copper coils, magnets, metal frames and wooden boxes, plus a "few" other parts and pieces, the best of the breed can produce realistic approximations of live sound. We rely on these devices to help us achieve good audio mixes, judge sound quality of content, and for enjoyment, to immerse ourselves in our favorite music. A good loudspeaker system is the result of careful engineering and design, involving the selection of the right components, materials, adhesives, and construction techniques to match desired criteria. And yet at its most basic, a loudspeaker's function is to accept an electrical audio signal, convert it into mechanical motion-which in turn compresses and rarifies the surrounding air to produce acoustic waves-which our ears pick up and our brain processes to form the sensation of hearing sound.
