摘要

When I moved to the Ozarks for graduaternschool in 1989, the place terrified me. First there wasrnthe Pig Trail, which is what the locals call the stretchrnof highway between Alma and Fayetteville, Arkansas.rnAs I embarked on the steepest stretch of it, I saw arnsign that read, "Caution: Eleven people killed on thisrnroad in the last two years." The sign changed everyrnyear or so to update the count. Even though thernOzark mountains are more like hills, they were steeprnenough to make me wince; I'd come from the prairiesrnto the west, so the precipitous roads and drenchingrnhumidity of this territory struck me as unnatural. Itrndidn't help that some of the locals pronouncedrn"Fayetteville" as "fateful."
