摘要

Wil mccarthy ("The Atomic Magician," page 62) became a science fiction writer during a decadelong stint as an aerospace engineer at Lockheed Martin. McCarthy says science fiction has always helped direct scientific progress, from space-flight to holograms. Now he is leading his company, RavenBrick LLC, in an effort to make his own sci-fi fantasies of "programmable matter" come true. McCarthy has appeared on the History channel and the Science Channel and has written for Wired and Popular Mechanics. Does he have any regrets about leaving rocket science? "A good measure of satisfaction, I think, is whether and how you would change your past if you had a time machine," McCarthy says. "Personally, I would smash the machine for fear of messing something up!"
