LARGE, POWERFUL earthquakes tend to occur in groups, but exactly why that is has long remained a mystery to scientists. Some researchers think the sun might be to blame. Eruptions on the sun's surface can cause coronal mass ejections - energetic floods of particles including ions and electrons that careen through the solar system at breakneck speeds. When they reach Earth, these charged particles can interfere with satellites, and under extreme circumstances, take down power grids.
