High-Point Rendel, in association with HR Wallingford, is nearing completion of a contract to develop methods of predicting and recording coastal cliff erosion rates that can be used by local authorities and coastal engineers. The three-year project for the UK Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF), has been evaluating a range of methods for reducing and controlling erosion. High-Point Rendel and HR Wallingford have proven track records for helping to solve cliff management problems throughout Britain and overseas. They have been supported by staff from the Institute of Estuarine and Coastal Studies. (Hull University) and the River and Coastal Environments Research Group (Portsmouth University). The project is aimed at helping coastal engineers to accurately predict future rates of erosion and select suitable techniques to control erosion. The methods being developed will improve the way in which coast protection schemes are evaluated on economic and environmental grounds.
