It is no coincidence that a journalist from the The Economist, specialised in business, finance and science, has written a book about food: Tom Standage draws on an acute observation by Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin ("The destiny of nations depends on how they nourish themselves") to narrate history not from the official point of view but as a series of events and transformations influenced by food. In doing so, he discovers its darker sides, highlighting the use of food even as a weapon in war. In fact food has been "the fuel of war" for the greater part of human history.
