Hakodate Port on Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido is undergoing upgrading work to accommodate large cruise ships. The work began at the end of 2018, but was not publicised until a ceremony was held in the port on 3 December 2017. Under the plan, a new berth will be constructed near the JR Hakodate station, adjacent to the Hakodate Seikan Renrakusen Memorial Museum Mashumaru. A 360 m quay wall and 250 m pier will be built to enable vessels of 120,000 gt to dock.
