Hywind Pilot Park, the world's first floating wind farm, is to be built at Buchan Deep, 25 km offPeterhead, Scotland, by Statoil. The company made the final NOK2 billion (USD226 million) investment decision towards the end of 2015. This follows a prototype project offthe Karmoy island in southeast Norway, where "the concept has been verified by six years of successful operation", Statoil said. The company estimates that the 30MW-capacity Hywind farm will realise a 60-70% cost reduction per megawatt over the prototype, thanks to "technical innovation", and, with average wind speed in the North Sea at about 10 m/s, power about 20,000 households.
